This page briefly explains design process I took during the projects from
MA interactive media at London College of Communication, particularly focusing on User Experience design process, such as case studies, identifying target user, creation of user scenario, and usability testing process. Those processes show my methodology of analysing user behaviour and conducting usability testing. As well as those user experience design process, this page describes concept development process I have taken.

"ink-ling" is a novel hand-held information sharing device that provides a tangible, softer means of communication. Multiple "ink-ling" devices can connect autonomously and wirelessly in public space, allowing real life information sharing and creating a physical social network. We envisage "ink-ling" functioning as a creative outlet for designers, musicians and anyone with the desire to share their personal portfolio of work with others.

It might be true that fast communication is taking up quite an important part of our life. On the other hand this network globalisation is double-edged sword insofar as there are several negative points that are not being integrated into society. Most importantly it is happening beyond the border. Before the society becomes completely monotonous, the network globalisation should be eased by alternative communication styles. Our communication style is already fast enough, and it is surely becoming much faster as technology advances. It would not be worse, if people gave a thought about the quality of communication, more emotional involvements instead of screen based communication.

This was a box, which looks like a bomb, but was painted in sweet colours and funny graphics. On the top, there was notice such as 'DANGER. DO NOT TOUCH THIS SWITCH'. People's expected reaction would be to try to touch the trigger timidly. When the people have touched it, it triggers several kinds of bell, which sound as if they come from a toy for babies, with vibration. People were surprised and laugh and their reactions would trigger laughter among the audiences. This project was in the group exhibition in Synjuku Takashimaya in 2001.
We decided to investigate social behaviour and communication in public spaces. We chose to base our experiment around elevators, as they provide a unique environment where strangers are forced to share a small, confined space. In the Tower block at LCC, we placed magnetic letters randomly on the ceiling of an elevator. In the other two elevators, we placed large sheets of paper and an attached pen on the walls. We then observed whether the presence of these objects made people behave differently.

This time, we used another version of the mock-up devices (but there was no function of transferring files between the devices). Despite the fact that there was not any file exchanging, it was the first time that we tested with sort of proper functionality on the device, the Graphic user interface of social networking part also was much more detailed, we expected to get an appropriate feedback..

The brief was to create a business social network for a imaginary consulting company Tulip, a multinational business that operates in 23 different countries and has over 10,000 employees. The focus in our Social Networking System was making visible the following; Presence, Updates, Location and Status. By doing this our system would keep Tulip Employees in sync with each other regardless of where they ware located or how long they have been at Tulip. This system would make accessing information fast and precise as well as highlighting connections within Tulip with an emphasis on 'who is working with whom' thus keeping everyone updated and united in Tulip. We have called this system 'tulip.PULS'
‘PULSmap’:
A map that will show a visual representation of connections made within ‘tulip.PULS’
showing who has contacted you.
This is the main focus of this system and will be the homepage for all users, keeping them
up-to-date every time they log into the system.
‘YOU’:
A page where the users personal information is stored, from here they can preview their
email, write in their blog (which we have called ‘YourLog’), view their RSS news feeds
(which we have called ‘Update’), view their calendar and bookmarks.
‘TEAM’:
A page where members of a team, in this case the client team, can pool resources and work
together online. There is a team wiki for online knowledge sharing and collaboration (we
have called the team wiki, ‘ColLab’), there is also a team calendar, to do list, Message board
(which we have called ‘SmartTalk’) and a Collaborative planning software (which we have
called ‘Planner’).
‘COMMUNITY’:
A page where members of a community, in this case the women MD’s, can commune and
share information and experiences. There is a community blog (which we have called ‘Share-
Log’) there is also a community calendar, Message board (which we have called ‘SmartTalk’)
and a Collaborative planning software (which we have called ‘Planner’).
Our user research goals
• Identify the primary user group
• Discover how employees communicate and collaborate regarding company actives and projects.
• Understand the drawbacks in the user group’s current processes and workflow.
• Collect the behavioural pattern of the user group
• Investigate how the users use the exiting social networking sites and what specific task do they do on the sites.
• Discover how social networks could leverage benefit to the users

The brief was to analyse the current desktop metaphor and create a new interface concept for a specific target group "Backpacker". This is for travelers and has a remote interface that allows users to easily document their trips by uploading media (music, photo's, video's, etc), contact details and documents onto specific locations relevant to their trip. In addition to this, users are encouraged to share this media – for example photo's of locations they have visited, as well music that they have listened to there. They can also tag locations on the map - restaurants, nightclubs etc that they wish to recommend. Thus users get not only an interface that allows them upload media, search the web, use applications, but also networks them with other travelers worldwide, in a geographic network.
